COF JOURNAL / DECISION GUIDE

Prop firm drawdown: read the rule precisely

Understand a prop firm drawdown reference, time window and calculation. Document boundary cases before an evaluation.

Request a written definition

A limit may track balance, equity or an earlier peak; it may be fixed or moving. Terminology alone is insufficient. Record the reference mechanism, included operations and any reset time. Use the specific offer’s definition instead of importing another challenge’s rule.

Build a paper example

On a worksheet, describe an open position, its changing value and its close. At each step, identify whether the rule tracks realised or unrealised values. Include contractual fees and session changes. The aim is to check understanding, not find a way around a limit.

Keep the result as an exercise

If two interpretations conflict, ask the supplier for a written answer. Personal simulation is not an official contractual interpretation. A COF journal can organise events but cannot validate reward eligibility. Verify supplier rules before enrolling.

Write the boundary case in plain words

To understand a rule, describe what enters the calculation: balance, equity, open positions, costs and time reference. Then describe a case where the account changes state during that window. This documentation exercise exposes ambiguity without proposing a personal risk level.

A fixed limit, a trailing limit and a rule recalculated at a stated time are not synonyms. Exact definitions must come from the applicable agreement. The cited FTMO page is an entry point to its own terms, not a table valid for other offers.

Keep the answer traceable

Retain the rule's wording, date and provider explanation. A calculation reconstructed after failure should remain labelled as interpretation until checked against the contractual document.

Your verification grid

ItemDocument or check to request
ReferenceName initial balance, peak, current balance or equity as defined in the agreement.
Included lossesCheck closed trades, open positions, commissions and financing.
WindowRecord time, timezone and any reset rule.
MovementIdentify fixed, trailing or recalculated limits using the provider's definition.
DisputeRetain calculation, events and written clarification of a boundary case.

Practical questions

Does a daily limit reset at local midnight?

Not necessarily. Timezone and reset time must come from the offer's terms. A translated interface does not establish a local time reference. Document the exact window before constructing an example.

How can I test a rule without committing money?

Write a fictitious event sequence: open position, charges, window change and close. Apply the written definition to each state. If two interpretations remain, ask the provider about the case; your worksheet is not a contractual decision.
